Frontier Day at New Echota

Get a glimpse into the way of life of the Cherokee Indian Nation in the 1820s on October 15, 2011 from 10 AM to 4 PM at the New Echota Historic Site in Calhoun, Georgia. Take a tour of the grounds and buildings to witness Cherokee artists and craftsmen demonstrating blacksmithing, candlemaking, basket making, weaving, and weaponry as it was done in the early 19th century.

New Echota Volunteer Day

New Echota Historic Site in Calhoun, Georgia is looking for volunteers to help with sprucing up the park in the Save our State Parks Volunteer Day on September 24, 2011 from 10 AM to 3 PM. The projects include trail work, cemetery clean up, painting, and more. If you have a group, such as the Scouts, please call ahead to register. Spring at New Echota

SpringCelebrate Spring at New Echota in Calhoun, Georgia on May 7, 2011 from 10 AM to 4 PM. Pack a lunch and come out for the day to help welcome in the spring. There will be historical demonstrations by friends of New Echota, Cherokee artists will be visiting, and guided tours will be just some of what is happening at this annual event.

Kawoni-Cherokee Time of the Flower Moon Program

CardinalVisit the New Echota Historic Site in Calhoun, Georgia for Kawoni: Cherokee Time of the Flower Moon Program on April 16, 2011 from 8 AM to 10 PM. This program starts off at 8 AM with a 2 mile bird walk  around Tarvin Branch Pond and Newtown Creek then continues at 10:30 AM with a plant and wildflower walk. Register in advance for a nature photography workshop that will will take place at 1:30 PM. Make a whole day of it and stay late for the 8 PM star party with telescopes. This will be a wonderful day of enjoying nature and the world around you.

Coulter Hampton Day

Bring the whole family out to Fairmount Elementary School on March 12, 2011 from 10 AM to 2 PM for Coulter Hampton Day. This will be a lot of fun with games, pony rides, inflatables, a petting zoo and more.

2 arm band options are available:
Option 1: $5 for all day play in the inflatables.
Option 2: $20 for all day play including the inflatables, games, euro jumper, pony ride, admission to the petting zoo (doesn’t include food) and lunch (1 slice of pizza or 1 hot dog/ chips/ drink)

This day is dedicated to a young man, Coulter Hampton, who lost his life to a horrible disease, aplastic anemia/dyskerasosis congenita. The event is hosted by the Coulter Hampton Foundation, a non profit organization whose mission is to help other children and their families who are fighting this disease and other childhood illnesses in Gordon County. Sequoyah Ball

The Calhoun Woman’s Club will be hosting the 24th Annual Sequoyah Ball at 211 Darby on March 5, 2011 at 7 PM. Enjoy an evening of entertainment provided by the Dexter Thomas Band featuring local artist India Galyean. There will be hors d’oeuvres and a full bar.

Native American Film Festival

Cinema FilmThe New Echota Historic Site will be hosting a Native American Film Festival on February 26, 2011 from 10 AM to 4 PM. Enjoy a day at New Echota learning Cherokee and other Native American cultures and history through a series of films, both shorts and feature films, and documentaries.
